Lecture: “Go in Fear of Abstractions: Conveying Emotions in Writing” (David Jauss)

Faculty: David Jauss
Saturday, September 18, 2010
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Location: TBA

Ezra Pound famously advised writers to “go in fear of abstractions,” and for good reason. Instead of conveying emotions through sensory details, we writers often label them abstractly. “He spoke angrily.” “She looked sad.” “They were nervous.” An emotion is not an idea. It is felt in bodies more than thought in minds. To convey emotions effectively, we must convey them physically. In this talk, David discusses how to use such sensory means as body language and metaphor to evoke emotions in our readers, and he also discusses ways that we can use abstractions more judiciously and effectively.

Lecture: “Savory Metaphors” (Sue Silverman)

Faculty: Sue Silverman
Saturday, September 18, 2010
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Location: TBA

To write creative nonfiction you need more than a good story. You need a good metaphor. You need to answer the reader’s most pressing question: “What does this have to do with me?” How can your story – which, after all, happened only to you – relate to your readers? How is your story universal and accessible? What does your story mean? Sue Silverman explores how the writer achieves universal relevance by savoring the images from a particular life, and then slanting them so they illuminate shared experience of the world. (Think of William Carlos Williams’s adage, “No ideas but in things.”) A question-and-answer period and writing exercises will follow the lecture.

Lecture: “Poetry and Prose: Writing Off the Page” (Nance Van Winckel)

Faculty: Nance Van Winckel
Sunday, September 19, 2010
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Location: TBA

In this interactive, multi-media class, we examine how words come alive on fabric and rock, even on sand or sky. One’s writing is no longer restricted to the printed page. Consider: a memoirist’s excerpts projected behind a dancer; words in textiles; snippets of story embedded in a painting. Following the innovative work of several visual-verbal artists, we explore ways to integrate text in non-page media.

Faculty Panel: Publishing and the Writing Life - Steps on the Journey

Faculty: David Jauss, Sue Silverman, Nance Van Winckel

Writing is challenging, and publishing, perhaps even more so. In this panel, our award-winning faculty discuss the difficulties and rewards of their lives as writers and the path to publication. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Panel: The Road to Publication – Regional Authors Share Their Stories

Faculty: Coordinated by Lopez publisher Iris Graville
Sunday, September 19, 2010
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Faculty Evening Reading

Faculty: David Jauss, Sue Silverman, Nance Van Winckel
Saturday, September 18, 2010
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Location: Orcas Center, Madrona Room, (917 Mt. Baker Rd., Eastsound, WA 98245)

At our evening reading, David Jauss, Sue Silverman, and Nance Van Winckel offer selections of their works. The oral presentation of the written word is an old and meaningful art. Often words come alive in new ways when presented by the authorial voice. Enjoyable, thoughtful, and beautiful, our faculty readings are a celebration of good writing. Orcas’s own popular and talented Gene Nery will start the evening off on a musical note with his guitar and vocals.
